Your Own IE Toolbar
Creating your own toolbar
In your Internet Explorer window you will probably have several toolbars, one will hold the back/forward buttons, etc, another will have the address bar, where you type in the address you want to visit. Well, have you ever wanted to produce your own toolbar, one for your blog? One which can point your users to whatever link you want, show your latest posts without even having to open your site? Well then this tutorial could be useful to you.
If you want an example of my toolbar CLICK HERE.
What will my toolbar look like?
Well, there is a screenshot below (Screenshot 1), this is something like what your toolbar will look like.

How to create the toolbar
- First thing is to go to the website Effective Brand
- Now click on Start Your Toolbar
- On the next window you can choose a logo which will appear in your toolbar, bear in mind this logo will be very small, and so a logo with too much detail will not appear well, I recommend creating one with text and colour (by clicking on "Otherwise, define your logo by text and color »", then you can create a simple logo. When you have created your logo you can specify a link this logo will point to by defining it in the text box bellow.
- Then press next and you will get taken to the next window, a search bar is added to your toolbar automatically, if you want to you can add your own search engine as well, but this is recommended for advanced users only.
- Press next again, now, the button window is opened, if you want you can add a button to your toolbar which when clicked on will direct your user to a web page, you don't have to put a button on, its entirely your choice.
- Once you have chosen a button, you can add some text to the button, a link which the user will be directed to when the button is clicked on, and a button hint, which will appear when the button is hovered over.
- Then click Next, now its time to specify a name for the toolbar, as well as a description of your toolbar. Once you have created your toolbar you can come back and edit it whenever you want, you will need a password, this is why you must specify a password here. As well as that, specify an e-mail address
- When you press next again it will begin to create your toolbar
- When it has finished creating your toolbar you can either install it, or add more to it, I would recommend adding more to it, which is what the next part of my tutorial is going to be about.
Editing your toolbar
See the screenshot below (Screenshot 2), and compare that with the numbered list below it.
- The link button: If you want to add a link button to your toolbar (which you may of added before) then this is what you should be looking at.
- The button with menu: If you want to add a button, but it shows a drop-down-menu when clicked on, with multiple links (like I have with the Beginner, Intermediate & Expert sections) then click on this link. In this window you can choose a button, add some text as well as add multiple links. Click "Add Link »" and you can specify caption, the URL and where it is placed in the menu
- The automatic content button: I would recommend ignoring this
- The RSS reader: This will put a button on your toolbar which will show the latest posts on your site, to make it do this you must specify your feed. Basically, just put the link to your website e.g. http://spaces.msn.com/members/keepthechange123, changing keepthechange123 to your user name, and add /feed.rss to the end e.g. http://spaces.msn.com/members/keepthechange/feed.rss. This is the link you should specify in the "Existing RSS Feed URL", you can also specify a picture and a feed title.
- The message box: I would recommend ignoring this button for now.
- The separator: If you want to add a separator to your toolbar click this button.
- The ticker: You can add a message to your toolbar if you want which will appear as a new ticket, just type in a message, specify the width and speed using the toolbars, choose the text and background colours and the direction you want the text to go
- The Radio: I would recommend ignoring this for now
- The News ticket: you can add a ticket which is based on a RSS feed. This is a great button to use, but I will not go into it here, I am going to create a RSS feed tutorial soon, in my Intermediate section, check back soon for it.
- The chat: I would recommend ignoring this for now.
- The privacy & popup blocker: I would recommend ignoring this, it can be a pain for your users if they already have a pop-up blocker, and it can take up system resources.
- The HTML component: This is for advanced users, I would recommend ignoring this for now.
- This part of your customisation allows you to change the layout of your toolbar. See the screenshot below (Screenshot 3), just hover over a button and you can move it left, right, edit the button or delete the button.
Once you have finished editing your button you can download your button by clicking the link at the top of the page, where it says:
The URL where users can download your toolbar:
http://yourusername.ourtoolbar.com [Log out]
When you click on that link it takes you to a page where you can download the instillation file for your toolbar, you can also use this link to tell your users where to go to find your toolbar.
